Welcome to Work Exchange (“WE”)

Thank you for your interest in our Work Exchange Program. We are always grateful for the many people who offer their service. We couldn’t do it without you.

There are two ways to serve: Regular Work Exchange (“WE”) and Maha Seva.

WE averages 4-6 hours a day during the festival, with possible shifts before and/or after the festival. For this service, you are given free festival entrance and free camping.

Maha Seva is reserved for people with previous experience in most cases. Maha Seva averages about 8 hours daily during the festival, with possible shifts before and/or after the festival. Set-up/ break-down and kitchen Maha Seva are different. Please read below. All Maha Sevites are given free festival entrance, free camping, and free vegetarian meals.

Please be sure to read all the info below on each department you apply for. The work exchange coordinator will expect that you can comply with all the requirements for any department you select in your application.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all Work Exchange and Maha Seva on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 5pm. However, your service may begin before the meeting.

You will only be contacted if you are accepted. There are two ways to serve: WE and Maha Seva. Please click on the departments below for dates and duties details. *No credits will be awarded towards other forms of housing if you don't camp.

DEPARTMENTS

The Bhakti Shoppe sells all festival merchandise, including water bottles, tee shirts, and yoga accessories. Retail experience is preferred. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm.
  • 2. You must complete 18 hours of work; one 6-hour shift on each festival day.
  • 3. $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.
Exchange:
  • 1. Free festival entrance & free camping*
You will be on-call at Headquarters (“HQ”), ready to help out in case any area of the festival requires it. Applying for this area also means that you could be permanently reassigned to another department during the festival. If you cannot lift or move heavy things easily, please DO NOT apply for this position. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. Complete 18 hours of loving service: one 6-hour shift on each festival day.
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

General Registration, Artist Registration, and Housing Registration open on Thursday, May 15, 2014. Your service might begin as early as 10am that day. You may have a shift on Thursday, but for some, the first thing you will attend is the orientation meeting at 5pm. For Artist Registration, familiarity with the festival talent is required. There is 1 Maha Seva position for each of these 3 departments. Previous festival experience is preferred. Requirements:
  • 1. Be available to work on Thursday, May 15 starting at 11am.
  • 2. Complete 18 hours of loving service in registration. (Maha Seva option is 24 hours of loving service.)
  • 3. Submit $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

The “Green Room” hosts the musicians going on and coming off the kirtan stage. You will be serving their needs and keeping the backstage area clean and cozy, so humility and tireless enthusiasm are a good fit for this area. Catering experience is a plus. You will be taking direction from the Green Room Coordinator, who could have you doing anything from running an errand, decorating, cleaning up, or filling a cooler with delicious non-alcoholic drinks. Ability and willingness to work late at night is preferred for this position. There is 1 Maha Seva position for this department. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. Complete 22 hours of loving service (28 hours for Maha Seva), including EITHER a setup shift on Thursday 5/15 OR a breakdown shift on Monday 5/19
  • 3. $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours

  • MAHA SEVA Option: There is one MAHA SEVA option for the green room. This is a 36-hour time commitment with the same arrival/departure requirements listed above. You will not be considered if you can work late at night. Previous festival experience preferred.
The Green Team is responsible for managing all the trash and recycling throughout the festival. This involves lifting heavy bags out of trash bins, so please DO NOT apply if you have back problems. The sun in the desert can be intense. Please come with a hat, sunscreen, and refillable water bottle for your shifts. There is 1 Maha Seva position available who will be overseeing the team. The Maha Sevite is expected to show up at the beginning of each shift (6am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm) and to make sure that the festival trash and recycling are under control. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. You must complete 16 hours of work, including a 4-hour shift on Mon. 5/19. (28 hours for Maha Seva.)
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

Headquarters is the communications hub of the festival. You must be organized and professional, with multi-tasking abilities. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. You must complete 18 hours of loving service at HQ: one 6-hour shift on each festival day.
  • 3. $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

Healing Sanctuary Registration opens on Friday, May 16, 2014. Your first commitment will be to show up for the 5pm Orientation Meeting on Thursday, May 15 at 5pm. You will be acting as receptionist for the outdoor Healing Sanctuary (near the mainstage). There are no Maha Seva positions for this service. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. Complete 18 hours of loving service in the healing sanctuary (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
  • 3. Submit $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.
Exchange:

This service experience is available as MAHA SEVA only. You will be chopping veggies and assembling food. Commercial kitchen experience is required. No shift on Monday. You may leave after your last shift on Sunday night (8:30pm). Requirements:
  • 1. Be available to work on Thursday, May 15 at 10am for your first shift.
  • 2. Complete 24 hours of work in the kitchen, including 3 breakfast prep shifts, 2 lunch prep shifts, and 3 dinner prep shifts.
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

  • 2. Complimentary meals on Thursday 5/15 and during the festival
This service experience is available as MAHA SEVA only. As a server you will show up 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner in the dining hall, and leave 30 minutes after closing. You will be expected to prepare for serving before the meal, and clean the dining hall when the meal is over. There will be a 6 hour clean-up/breakdown shift on Monday 5/19, so please make plans to leave no sooner than that evening. Requirements:
  • 1. Be available to work on Thursday, May 15 at 5:30pm for your first shift.
  • 2. Complete 24 hours of loving service: one shift on Thursday 5/15, two shifts daily on Friday/Saturday/Sunday, and one 6-hour breakdown shift on Monday 5/19.
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

This service experience is available as MAHA SEVA only. Please read “Kitchen Food Service” for REQUIREMENTS and EXCHANGE. As a ticket-taker, you will be dining hall’s Bhakti bouncer. You need not be physically imposing, however, you must have a big voice and assertive demeanor. Everyone who enters the dining hall must have a meal ticket and it will be your job to check this.
This service experience is available as MAHA SEVA only. This service experience is available as MAHA SEVA only. Please read “Kitchen Food Prep” for REQUIREMENTS and EXCHANGE, except only 22 hours are required for this exchange and arrival time is 11am (rather than 10am) on Thursday, May 15. This is a good fit for someone who loves doing dishes.
The festival’s pool is a really fun place to be stationed. Current lifeguard certification is mandatory. There will be an umbrella for shade, but please bring a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle to every shift. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm
  • 2. Complete about 15 hours: one 4.5 hour shift on each festival day
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

Parking involves greetings people and directing cars to appropriate parking spaces. The sun in the desert can be intense. Please come with a hat, sunscreen, and refillable water bottle for your shifts. You will EITHER have shifts Thurs/Fri/Sat OR Fri/Sat/Sun. You may state your preference in your application and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Requirements:
  • 1. Be available to work on Thursday, May 15 by 10 am OR for the Orientation Meeting at 5pm.
  • 2. Complete 14 hours of loving service in parking or security.
  • 3. $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

Security involves checking wristbands. You must be alert and able to confront people. You will either be stationed around the entrance, in the camping area, or throughout the festival. The sun in the desert can be intense. Please come with a hat, sunscreen, and refillable water bottle for your shifts. You will EITHER have shifts Thurs/Fri/Sat OR Fri/Sat/Sun. You may state your preference in your application and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Setup and breakdown are Maha Seva positions. Setup will begin Tuesday, May 13 in the morning and finish sometime during the day on Thursday, May 15. Breakdown will begin on Monday, May 19 and finish Wednesday, May 21. You will either be doing setup OR breakdown.
You will be helping the construction crew to build and breakdown the festival. This job is a lot of work! Please come prepared to get a lot done. You’ll be able to enjoy the entire festival with no interruptions. Requirements:
  • 1. Arrive for setup or stay through breakdown (see above)
  • 2. Your hours will not be clocked for this job. You may work up to 35 hours on either setup or breakdown.

This position requires professional sound experience. Most of the yoga classes at Shakti Fest have live music, so you will be assisting the teachers and to make sure the musical and yogic experience is seamless. This position is ideal for someone with sound experience who is interested in taking and/or observing yoga classes and workshops. There is 1 Maha Seva position available for this department. This Maha Sevite must be able to work a mixing board. Requirements:
  • 1. Come to WE Orientation meeting on Thur. May 15 at 5 pm (no pre-festival work).
  • 2. Complete 22 hours of loving service over the three festival days (30 hours for Maha Seva, including sound for the yoga intensive on Monday 5/19 morning and some breakdown of sound equipment).
  • 3. $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

This position requires stage experience. You will be assistants to the stage manager. Please mention if you are unwilling or unable to work after midnight in the extra comments box on the application, as this job will go as late as the music! This position is ideal for someone who is mostly interested in the kirtan stage at the festival. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm.
  • 2. Complete 22 hours of loving service, including a 6-hour break-down shift on Monday 5/19.
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

Vendor Registration opens on Wednesday, May 14. We need 2 types of people for this service: 1)Receptionists: affable, good problem-solvers and direction-takers; 2) Strong and heat-tolerant “runners”: helping vendors unload, marking spaces, “running” between the registration booth and the vendor spaces. If you are available early, this is a fun way to get most of your Work Exchange hours done before the festival. There is 1 Maha Seva position available for this department and they will be on-call during the festival. Requirements:
  • 1. Be on-site by Wednesday, May 14 at 7am. (N.B. You may be asked to arrive earlier or later, at the Vendor Coordinators discretion. If you are selected for this service, you will be put in touch with her.)
  • 2. Complete 22 hours of loving service; 28 hours for Maha Seva.
  • 3. Submit a $200 deposit, refundable upon adequate completion of your WE hours.

As a yoga hall assistant, you will be in charge of checking people into yoga classes, guiding yogis into neat lines, and helping the yoga teacher get everyone’s mats in order so we can use each yoga space to its full capacity. You must be very patient, be able to project your voice, and give graceful directions. The Yoga Info Booth is where people sign-up for classes in the morning and come ask questions about the festival. Previous experience at Bhakti/Shakti Fest is required for this deparment. There is 1 Maha Seva position available. Requirements:
  • 1. Be present for the Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 15 at 5pm.
  • 2. Complete 18 hours: one 6-hour shift on each festival day (24 hours for Maha Seva).
